Progressive Students Collective held a People’s Assembly for Political Rights this Sunday.
A conference was organized by PSC to “talk about people’s rights and the authoritarian conditions” prevailing in the country. Political workers such as Khurram Ali from Karachi Bachao Tehreek, Sohail Baloch from BSO, Raheem Wazir from PTM, lawyers including Iman Mazari, Hadi Ali Chatta, Asad Jamal, and academics like Ali Usman Qasmi spoke in detail at the conference.
While addressing participants, Iman Mazari said that the constitution is being “murdered” through the passing of the 26th and 27th amendments, and that the only meaningful resistance possible is on the streets. Convener of KBT, Khurram Ali, said that people must organize themselves and their parties, and take action if they wish to create space and hope for the common citizens of this country.
Ali Abdullah, President of PSC, stated that students will resist such brazen attempts to suspend all political rights and impose a de facto martial law in the country, just as students resisted Ayub Khan in 1968.
The assembly concluded with a joint declaration demanding the release of Ghani Amman and all political workers, an end to operations and violence in Balochistan and Waziristan, rejection of the 26th and 27th amendments, and the restoration of student unions in Pakistan. PSC also announced that it will hold a student march on February 9 to demand the restoration of student unions in the country.
