Balochistan: Zubair Baloch, a prominent student leader and the former chairman of Baloch Students Organization (Pajjar), has been killed in a “target-based operation” by security forces at his home in Dalbandin, Balochistan, on September 24.
Zubair, a well-known voice of dissent, had long spoken out against the systematic suppression of the Baloch people by the Pakistani state. He had previously been abducted by law enforcement agencies and held incommunicado for nine months without charge — his only “crime” being the organization of a student book fair.
Progressive Students’ Collective (PSC) expressed anger and grief at the incident. “This is state brutality at its peak,” PSC spokesperson Sara Ali told The Students’ Herald. “Zubair Baloch’s murder is a continuation of enforced disappearances, abductions, and killings meant to silence Baloch youth. But the state must know: their blood will water the tree of resistance.”
The incident is yet another dark chapter in the decades-long chain of targeted violence against Baloch students and political workers. With each killing, alienation between the Baloch people and the state deepens, while the cycle of repression continues unchecked. Critics argue that Pakistan’s security policies — pouring billions into militarization while silencing dissent — are pushing the country further into crisis.
